Doctors should routinely question patients about sleep problems, as insomnia can increase the risk of a number of serious health conditions, experts say..
Left untreated, insomnia can increase the risk of developing potentially life-threatening conditions such as depression, diabetes and high blood pressure, but it often goes unrecognised and untreated, a review published online in The Lancet stated.
Around one in four adults experiences sleep problems, and up to one in ten suffers from insomnia. Typical symptoms include having difficulty falling or staying asleep, or feeling unrefreshed after a night's sleep. During the day people with insomnia can also suffer from fatigue, trouble concentrating and mood disturbances.
Most people with the condition are vulnerable to recurrent episodes and research suggests that nearly 70 per cent of those with insomnia continue to experience symptoms a year later, and half still have insomnia up to three years later.
The authors of the review, Dr Charles Morin from the Université Laval, Québec City, and Ruth Benca from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, said insomnia can lead to "substantial long-term effects" on people's physical and mental wellbeing.
People with insomnia are more than five times as likely to experience anxiety and depression, are at more than double the risk of developing congestive heart failure and diabetes, and are at a higher risk of premature death, the authors said.
They highlighted a study which found that people with insomnia were seven times more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs over the next three and a half years compared to those without the condition.
Although many with insomnia turn to over-the-counter medicines for the sleep disorder, the authors said there was "little evidence" of their effectiveness.
Despite the widespread use of prescription drugs and many turning to over-the-counter treatments for insomnia, the long-term use of these drugs has not been not been well studied, the authors said.
The National Institutes of Health in the US states that only two treatments - cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and approved hypnotic drugs - have sufficient evidence to support their use for the treatment of insomnia.
CBT uses psychological and behavioural methods such as relaxation techniques, sleep restriction, stimulus control, and education about sleep hygiene (e.g. diet, exercise, and the bedroom environment).
In addition to being an effective treatment for insomnia, CBT does not carry the risk of side effects, a clear advantage over drug treatment, said the authors, who added there was a shortage of therapists.
"Although CBT is not readily available in most clinical settings, access and delivery can be made easier through the use of innovative methods such as telephone consultations, group therapy, and self-help approaches via the internet," the authors said.
"In view of the high prevalence and substantial morbidities of insomnia, patients should routinely be asked about sleep problems by health-care providers.
"There is an urgent need for more public education about sleep and broader dissemination of evidence-based therapies for insomnia, and education and training to prepare health-practitioners to attend and treat insomnia complaints according to clinical guidelines."

Interesting that they say the connection of Frankincense being psychoactive is poorly understood. It seems pretty simple and straightforward to me. I have been fortunate to study with the amazing Dr. Berkowsky, who writes that Frankincensebinds to THC receptors in the body after it has been inhaled. If it binds to and activates these receptors, than wouldn't the mechanism be fairly similar to when one smokes or ingests cannabis and binds to these same receptors to cause changes in the brain. I assume their have been studies done on cannabis and its psychoactive components, so I bet it works in much the same way. Also, it is interesting to note that if you put a drop of pure Frankincense on a blotter strip and track its scent for 10 or more days, you will notice it starts to smell strikingly like cannabis around day 5 or 6 for the next several days of tracking the scent.

Plant based nutrition and health
So if you adopt a plant based diet and self help you can expect a further ten years of healthy life - ok deal.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plant-Based-Nutrition-Health-Stephen/dp/0907337260
Lets consider both sides of the case. I live in a country district which is 50% grassland so I can see that the keeping of animals for food is not damaging to the environment. The argentines eat more beef than anyone else and their health is for the most part pretty good. The taking of synthetic medicine if you are really ill is of course inescapable. So scientifically and environmentally you cant say plant good animal bad. However science points us in the direction of at least maintaining a balanced diet and plant based non toxic self help. Plant based self help for the 'worried well' is scientifically sound.

Polyphenols - in tea, citrus, chamomile
Chamomile can be made into an infusion which is commonly used to help with sleep. Because chamomile can cause uterine contractions which can lead to miscarriage, the U.S. National Institutes for Health says that pregnant and nursing mothers should not consume chamomile. Chrysin, a flavonoid found in chamomile, has been shown to be anxiolytic in rodents, and is believed to be at least partially responsible for chamomile's reputation as a sleep aid. It is known to reduce stress. In the essential oil azulene is formed in the process of distillation which is used for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a system of medicine which involves treating the individual with highly diluted substances, given mainly in tablet form, with the aim of triggering the body’s natural system of healing. Based on their specific symptoms, a homeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to each patient.
More
homeopathy is a tough one for the regulators. if you take a substance which has biological effects and then dilute it can it still be said to have a biological effect and so be a medical device?
weight is placed on the claims of manufacturers. If the substance is claimed to have an effect then it is a medical device and regulated as such.

Playing Politics with Aromatherapy - Big Mistake?
Maldives spas face closure following government ban
Spas across the Maldives are facing closure following pressure from religious groups who said they led to prostitution and alcoholism among locals.
The country's president Mohamed Nasheed issued a statement on Saturday that said: "The government has decided to close massage parlours and spas in the Maldives, following an opposition-led religious protest last week calling for their closure."
The region's spa resorts are one of its leading sources of tourism, netting the nation an estimated $1.5bn a year, some 30% of its GDP.
The president said the closures came as a result of pressure from opposition parties who found massage, as well as sale of pork and alcohol in the mainly Muslim nation, to be offensive.
However, opposition party the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) said the government was using the protests to punish resort owners, many of whom are PPM members.
A spokesman for PPM told Reuters: "We wanted the liquor and massage clinics banned in inhabited islands to prevent prostitution and spread of drugs and alcohol to locals. Nasheed is misusing the demands to take revenge by imposing the ban on resorts owned by the opposition members."
Some of the biggest names in spa are set to be affected by the ban if it is enforced this year. Luxury resort group One & Only operates one of its biggest spas, One & Only Reethi Rah, in the Maldives and The Six Senses group runs Soneva Fushi and Soneva Gili there. Last year, the Per Aquum group, which runs the famous Huvafen Fushi underwater spa resort (pictured) there, opened a second Maldivian resort called Niyama.
COMMENT
This raises the question of whether there is a regulatory structure in place and working in the Maldives and whether the Spas are employing qualified and ethical practitioners of massage. If the spas management are encouraging alcoholism and prostitution then they should of course be replaced and their licences revoked until they can demonstrate a fit and proper environment. There are plenty of ethical and competant practitioners for them to employ and so demonstrate compliance. Muslims in my experience know how to have a good time with aromatherapy better than anyone. The Prophet described the delights to the senses the aromas bring. So it is possible to have a good time without offending religious groups.
But those who have faith and work righteousness, they are companions of the Garden: Therein shall they abide (For ever).
(Surah Al-Baqara, 82)Christians too see heaven in terms of an aromatic garden. Bede describes visions of heaven in these terms.

From Pranarom - liver care with essential oils
In the UK we maintain Essential Oil should not be taken internally. Of course essential oil is taken in the form of flavourings and fragrances in minute quantities. 95% of essential oils are consumed in this way. In France a drop of essential oil (a very very small amount 20 drops equals 1ml) is added to a sugar cube to aid digestion or for specific purposes.
Some essential oils should not be taken internally irrespective of dose as they irritate the mucous membranes so the UK approach is a safe one as far as the general public are concerned. There is a well established professional qualification in aromatherapy and trade bodies of practitioners so always consult a local knowledgeable practioner who will also be qualified in massage and other complementary therapies.
Aromatherapy or complementary therapies should never be considered alternative medicine. Always consult your GP about any symptoms you may have. GPs have spent 10 years in qualifying and practice before becoming a GP so your health is in safe hands should you feel unwell.

The liver is a key organ in the body. On the one hand, he transforms nutrients into valuablecellular elements. On the other, it is there to "reject" cellular waste and clean up fluids. In addition, the liver is a gland that determines the level of energy and vitality by ensuring a good quality of blood flow. Liver function is vital and it is important to pamper the body inthe household (not too much alcohol), but also by cleaning from time to time.
To do this, you can opt for a course of essential oils to be taken daily by mouth. We think of course the essence of lemon essential oil of rosemary verbenone, to take on a sugar orbread at a rate of 1 drop of each essential oil at every meal.

Basil and Black Pepper - MARTI PATRI PROPVGNATORI
Father Mars who fights for us. Among the ancients in Asia and the Mediterranean the heat of malarial fevers were treated with the herbs Basil (from the leaves of Ocimum Basilicum) and Black Pepper (Piper nigrum). These two hot spices originating in Asia were esteemed very highly as a result.
Spices were among the first goods to be traded over long distances with the dawn of the Bronze Age 4000 years ago. Basil literally means regal or noble (Greek). The Basilica is the name given to the central part of a royal palace or temple. Both herbs are associated with mental fortitude as well as being flavourings and aids to digestion.
