Aromatherapy blending for all seasons
February
February is the month in which Valentines Day falls. People express their love by sending anonymous cards. Individuals that are physically or emotional exhausted, under stress, lacking proper nutrition, depressed, anxious or physically ill often have a significantly more difficult time enjoying intimacy.
Substances, including essential oils, that are considered aphrodisiacs are substances that can help dissipate the physical, psychological or emotional ailments that may interfere with sexual desire or arousal. For instance, an aphrodisiac may help with one or more of the following:
Help Aid a Physical Ailment
Reduce Stress
Calm Anxiety
Energize the Body and Mind
Uplift the Mood
Ease Depression
Appeals to the Senses
Now of course most people do not spend their lives in a frenzy of romantic passion. There is a whole class of anaphrodisiacs which diminsh sexual desire. Sweet Marjoram has been used since ancient times to help monks achieve their vows of sexual abstinence to concentrate on their spirituality.

Skincare making tips for aromatherapists
Best of luck with your skincare. So satisfying when you heat up your first lanette wax and ionised water. A squirt of grapefruit extract as preservative (Vit E is an alternative but grapefruit works the best) and of course your aromatherapy blend. Let it cool and into a PET bottle or jar. Label it and its Done! Whether you get a cream or lotion depends on the proportion of lanette to water. The main reason natural products go yucky is the strength of the grapefruit extract. Grapefruit extract is a favourite preservative. The best extract we have come across comes from Mexico there are cheaper copies on the UK market so beware. Also the use of the hydrolats. Hydrolats are great but not sterile so you are inoculating your product if you use them rather than ionised water so be aware of that. As Sue says the hydrolats dont last long. The hydrolats should be fresh season (most aromas are distilled in the summer/autumn so thats the time to buy)and kept in the fridge and away from sunlight. An £18 product batch test to check how your product got on in terms of sterility is available from local labs. Place it on file. This is a key part of your Safety Assessment. Watch out you dont overdo the citrus or rose absolute these are the usual reason for blends failing safety assessment. The safety assessment is the file note you make when placing a product on the market. Be sure to keep a batch book recording the name of the product, the batch number, number you made. Do register your product under the Cosmetics Directive online if marketing to the public. This is easily done and you get an email receipt back which you file ahead of any trading standards visit. A soil association registration is great but costs some £350 per annum which covers the cost of the annual visit and is good value. There is more info on www.janbenham.co.uk and her book is worth a read. Happy cooking!
Kind regards
