Skincare for better Mental Health

Aromatherapy and Pregnancy

Generally essential oils are used with caution in pregancy just like any chemicals. However for stretch marks they have been found to be useful. The use of the oils diffused for anxiety carries benefits without risks as the impact on the brain can be achieved with just a few molecules.  Essential oils have traditionally been used for birthing mothers. Jasmine oil in particular has been found to be beneficial.

Here is useful background on the discoveries being made about the impact on the brain of pregnacy. 
Zoe Williams explores the radical changes that take place in a woman's brain over the course of pregnancy. It's an area of women's health we know surprisingly little about - but psychologists studying the effects of reproduction on the brain are now beginning to make startling discoveries.
During pregnancy, a woman's hormone levels rise to more than 100 times those seen during any other naturally occurring life event. The latest research suggests that these powerful chemicals re-programme the mum-to-be in a process labelled "maternal programming".
The proponents of the maternal programming theory argue that mothers are "made, not born" and the chemical and structural changes that occur within the pregnant brain optimise a woman's maternal behaviour in order for her to provide the most sensitive and protective care when her child is born. Zoe examines the implications of this theory for fathers and adoptive parents who have not undergone this biological priming.
Zoe will also explore the effects of depression and stress during pregnancy, discovering that, while post-natal depression regularly grabs the headlines, ante-natal depression is just as common. Studies suggest that children born to mothers who suffered from clinically significant levels of anxiety and depression during pregnancy are more likely to suffer from a range of psychological and physical problems and are three times more likely to develop depression in later life. But this research has its critics, who argue that women are getting blamed for the health outcomes of their children and that telling women not to get stressed during pregnancy only heightens their levels of anxiety.

My garden Centifolia are shrubby growing upto 2 m tall, with long drooping canes and greyish green pinnate leaves with 5-7 leaflets. The flowers are round and globular, with numerous thin overlapping petals that are highly scented. Here the heavy flowering head is developing well.

The Rose oil of commerce is Rosa Damascena. Shirley Price Aromatherapy purchase several kg for out customers from Bulgaria and Morocco each season. The Centifolia rose is grown in Grasse, France where it is used as a perfume in Chanel perfume. Just a few molecules of this exquisite rose are sufficient to have a striking emotional effect.

Aromatherapy and babies

As a total DAD to 4 children I would like to point out particularly the beneficial effect of fresh season jojoba oil for nappy rash.

In my experience no particular essential oil is needed as the jojoba will take care of it. Besides being chemically similar to the skins natural oil sebum fresh jojoba contains helpful vitamins.

So less stress all round and may even convince the most sceptical of husbands of the merits of plant oils for the skin.

A drop of lavender oil at bathtime will turn this from a stressful experience to a delight.

They are all getting so big now!
