Sage (salvia officinalis)

Sage (salvia officinalis) essential oil is one of the 48 specialty SP essential oils which are better used by trained individuals and qualified aromatherapists. The strong aroma of sage oil is herbaceous, fruity, fresh and camphorous.   Inhaled the aroma can be very helpful emotionally for individuals who feel in need of healing but doubt their ability to shake off their ailments.

With its high thujone content it is avoided in pregnancy and in epilepsy.  Robert Tisserand recommends avoiding Sage oil altogether in aromatherapy massage work.   Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is the more commonly used sage oil.  Sage oils are useful for female conditions but require some caution and care in use.

A warming and relaxing oil.  Woodchips are burned by middle eastern brides to relax their husbands on honeymoon.  We provide a sandalwood aftershave balm which is very popular.  One of the great oils for skincare it finds its way into soap.  A very expensive oil we have to work quite hard on the sourcing. Quality from India varies from the best to the worst as it is frequently derived from trees imported from Indonesia.  We stock and recommend Sandalwood oil from sustainable plantations in New Caledonia for its consistency. We also recommend Australian sandalwood.

Tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia)

Tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia) Tea tree oil, like thyme oil is not an oil which is emotionally charged but instead an anti viral and antifungal workhorse.  This doesnt mean that a treatment doesnt have psychosocial effects.  All such treatments help alleviate the anxiety associated with undiagnosed symptoms or an infection in progress.  A little bottle could find a place in every kitchen cabinet and is one of the best selling essential oils for its effectiveness and relative safety for example in a gargle for a sore throat or helping tackle a nailbed fungal infection.  Tea tree oil will not eliminate such infections on its own but it will enhance the effectiveness of over the counter remedies and reduce the necessary exposure of the body to the synthetic chemicals in them.  The star constituent is terpinen-4-ol.  Like all oils it appears more effective as a whole oil rather than with only this constituent alone illustrating the principle of synergy among essential oil components.  Tea tree oil should be kept away from pets.  The aroma is fresh, earthy, woody, herbaceous.

Not one of our kit 48 oils but it remains a very interesting and useful oil because of its biblical connection.  The aroma is warm, earthy, woody, musty. You might call it the oil of forgiveness.

As life goes on we inevitably find things to reproach ourselves for.  Perhaps we could have spent more time with our parents or avoided a family row.  Things like this niggle away at the back of our minds.  An oil which can heal these doubts and allow us to forgive ourselves and others is very useful.  It is famous of course as the biblical Nard applied to the feet of Jesus by Mary Magdalen.

: the bactericidal oil.  Thyme oil is not much used in massage or perfumery.  It is a mild skin and mucous membrane irritant.  The aroma is fresh, medicinal and herbaceous. This oil is also antifungal making it an oil of choice alongside lemon oil for the cleaning in the kitchen and bathroom.  Simply fill a 16oz bottle with water and add essential oil shaking well. Hygiene is very important in hospitals - surgery is impractical without it.  With concern rising about antibiotic resistant bacteria its interesting to reflect that bacteria dont acquire resistance to essential oils like thyme oil.  This is because essential oils act on bacterial cell membranes for example making them more porous and preventing the bacteria replicating.

For its bactericidal properties Thyme oil finds its way into many over the counter products for example toothpaste and mouthwash.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil (Cananga odorata)

Ylang Ylang Complete (Cananga Odorata): the oil of harmony.  its a clear oil and part of every aromatherapists tool kit.  Ylang 'Complete' consists of the whole distillation while Ylang 'Extra' is the product of the first 30 minutes or so's distillation.  Ylang I, II. III are used by the specialist perfumery trade. Another calming oil useful for anxiety and relaxation and noted for this reason as an aphrodisiac.  Relaxation is not the same as sedation.  The action of the oil might be better described as harmonisation. The oil appears to open the mind to joyous thoughts.  Ylang is particularly useful as it blends well with citrus top notes creating a harmonious whole.  Try it.  Add bergamot and other top note oils to the carrier base first.  The result is sharp.  If a drop of ylang is added to this the aroma becomes a deeper pleasant harmonious whole.  Ylang makes an ideal middle to base note to add to a blend. It has a fresh, floral, sweet, slightly fruity, fragrant smelling aroma.  The benzyl acetate content of the oil helps stretch the experience of a jasmine blend which midwives find is so useful for mothers after giving birth.  A little Ylang oil goes a long way so use it sparingly in blends as some people can experience headaches when inhaling it.

Vetiver Essential oil (Vetiveria zizanoides)

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides): the oil of restfulness.  its a pretty thick oil so we add a slightly wider dropper to the bottle. You also can try warming the bottle and carrier in a little hot water. Some therapists find that vetiver is more effective than lavender for dealing with anxiety and sleeplessness. Vetiver carries less emotional charge so it can be better for hospital use for example with families experiencing cancer. It makes an ideal base note to a blend. It has a strong earthy and complex smelling aroma. You need a whiff of coffee to clear the nose if you are blending so leave it to last as it is described as woody, smokey, earthy, herbaceous and spicy all in one oil. So a little goes a long way!

Inhaling Essential oils and haptens

Essential oils that are inhaled into the lungs offer both psychological and physical benefits. Not only does the aroma of the natural essential oil stimulate the brain to trigger a reaction, but when inhaled into the lungs, the natural constituents (naturally occurring chemicals) can supply therapeutic benefit.

 The EU list of allergens are better referred to as haptens. An allergic reaction involves a reaction to proteins and while there is protein in grass pollens etc there is none in EOs.

EO constituents can combine with skin proteins to produce an allergic reaction but this is rare. A little dab of diluted oil on the inner elbow is enough to test. A small number of people 0.1% can have a reaction to EOs which shows as skin redness and is remedied by washing off the EO. If no redness results then go ahead.
