Polyphenols - in tea, citrus, chamomile

Chamomile can be made into an infusion which is commonly used to help with sleep. Because chamomile can cause uterine contractions which can lead to miscarriage, the U.S. National Institutes for Health says that pregnant and nursing mothers should not consume chamomile. Chrysin, a flavonoid found in chamomile, has been shown to be anxiolytic in rodents, and is believed to be at least partially responsible for chamomile's reputation as a sleep aid. It is known to reduce stress.  In the essential oil azulene is formed in the process of distillation which is used for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Playing Politics with Aromatherapy - Big Mistake?

Maldives spas face closure following government ban

Spas across the Maldives are facing closure following pressure from religious groups who said they led to prostitution and alcoholism among locals.

The country's president Mohamed Nasheed issued a statement on Saturday that said: "The government has decided to close massage parlours and spas in the Maldives, following an opposition-led religious protest last week calling for their closure."

The region's spa resorts are one of its leading sources of tourism, netting the nation an estimated $1.5bn a year, some 30% of its GDP.

The president said the closures came as a result of pressure from opposition parties who found massage, as well as sale of pork and alcohol in the mainly Muslim nation, to be offensive.

However, opposition party the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) said the government was using the protests to punish resort owners, many of whom are PPM members.

A spokesman for PPM told Reuters: "We wanted the liquor and massage clinics banned in inhabited islands to prevent prostitution and spread of drugs and alcohol to locals. Nasheed is misusing the demands to take revenge by imposing the ban on resorts owned by the opposition members."

Some of the biggest names in spa are set to be affected by the ban if it is enforced this year. Luxury resort group One & Only operates one of its biggest spas, One & Only Reethi Rah, in the Maldives and The Six Senses group runs Soneva Fushi and Soneva Gili there. Last year, the Per Aquum group, which runs the famous Huvafen Fushi underwater spa resort (pictured) there, opened a second Maldivian resort called Niyama.

COMMENT

This raises the question of whether there is a regulatory structure in place and working in the Maldives and whether the Spas are employing qualified and ethical practitioners of massage.  If the spas management are encouraging alcoholism and prostitution then they should of course be replaced and their licences revoked until they can demonstrate a fit and proper environment.  There are plenty of ethical and competant practitioners for them to employ and so demonstrate compliance.  Muslims in my experience know how to have a good time with aromatherapy better than anyone.  The Prophet described the delights to the senses the aromas bring. So it is possible to have a good time without offending religious groups.

But those who have faith and work righteousness, they are companions of the Garden: Therein shall they abide (For ever).

Christians too see heaven in terms of an aromatic garden.  Bede describes visions of heaven in these terms.

In the UK we maintain Essential Oil should not be taken internally. Of course essential oil is taken in the form of flavourings and fragrances in minute quantities. 95% of essential oils are consumed in this way.  In France a drop of essential oil (a very very small amount 20 drops equals 1ml) is added to a sugar cube to aid digestion or for specific purposes.

Some essential oils should not be taken internally irrespective of dose as they irritate the mucous membranes so the UK approach is a safe one as far as the general public are concerned.  There is a well established professional qualification in aromatherapy and trade bodies of practitioners so always consult a local knowledgeable practioner who will also be qualified in massage and other complementary therapies.

Aromatherapy or complementary therapies should never be considered alternative medicine.  Always consult your GP about any symptoms you may have.  GPs have spent 10 years in qualifying and practice before becoming a GP so your health is in safe hands should you feel unwell.

A report by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Drug Misuse estimated in 2009 that there were 1.5 million involuntary tranquilliser addicts in the UK. More than 6.6 million benzodiazepine prescriptions for anxiety were dispensed by England's pharmacies in 2010, a 15 per cent increase in 10 years. Prescriptions for Valium have increased by 20 per cent over the same period.

The Scare: Certain groups say fragrances contain irritants, allergens, hormone disrupters, and toxic chemicals that cause everything from reproductive problems to cancer to neurological disorders.

Origin of the Scare: Products in the U.S. aren’t required to list the exact fragrance ingredients they contain. (But a list of almost all compounds used as fragrances — 3,194 ingredients in all — is publicly available.) Advocacy groups want products to list exact ingredients, claiming many fragrances are dangerous. In June, a new version of the Safe Cosmetics Act returned to Congress, which calls for the listing of all ingredients in products.

Bottom Line: When used as directed there’s no evidence exposure to chemicals in flavours and fragrances are harmful.
